Artist's Comments

underneath the stars.
(title from Robbie Williams - Man Machine)

The first submission from my Industrial 3 class. I shot this with film, exposing it for about 8-10 minutes. The center white dot is the north star with all other stars rotating around it. :D

OMG.....im so glad you explained how you did it because i wouldn't have appreciated it as much as I do now (sorry if that sounds retarted, but its true!). WOW....The thing that caught my attention was not the picture itself, but the comment about the north star. I had to relook at it again. When I look at this picture, I think of the old astronomers who only had pen and paper to capture this, and how they were able to figure it out, and also how easy it would have been if they had a camera......... :) (hopefully this is "advanced" enough for ya!)

very nice, I've always want to get into astrography, but since I live in the city and rarely get out, I can't really try. But I do plan on trying it sometime. I heard to use slow film, but whats the f-stop you used for this shot. I would imagine a 5.6 +, but then again I use 16 usually just so that the d.o.f is just right for my time-lapse.

hehe...yes, it was advanced enough. ya know, you're not required to leave me an advanced comment...just say whatever ya want. :D

Thanks for the comment though, I enjoyed reading it.

Thank You. I had to drive a little to get this shot as well, probably about a half hour...up a mountain. I shot it wide open, at f/3.5 for an hour and a half and set the focus at infinity.

really nicely done, I have been told shots like this are a bitch to do, but it looks like you managed to pull it off - it really works, all around

Ah, thanks alot for the info, I heard about that, wide open, but I was a little uncertain, but I'll go by your advice. The closest I got to doing this type of photography was this shot of the CN tower here in Toronto, and I let it expose for a little more than a minute, and I noticed after looking very close to the picture that the stars had a slight rotation to them, but totally unseen when in the 4x6 format.

Try 8 minutes and then 30 and then maybe the hour and 30 minutes. Good luck. :D

Thank You. It wasn't that difficult, just time consuming.
